Craftsman Ian Major at work.

When Ian Major clocks off as a conservationist working in Sherwood Forest, he likes nothing better than to unwind by reaching for a lump of locally grown timber and re-learning the skills of the area’s once famous rustic craftspeople.

Wood turning and furniture making has been in his blood for two decades.

Now together with fellow craftsman and chairmaker, Bryan Eskriett, from Clipstone, he plans to share his love for wood by helping to stage a two-day rustic stool making workshop for beginners on 31 March in the Forestry Commission’s Sherwood Pines Forest Park, near Clipstone, Notts.

Together, Ian and Bryan dub themselves ‘The Jolly Bodgers of Sherwood Forest‘ and stress-busting is how they describe their hobby.

But for both it’s a pastime that also touches on a longer-term vision for ancient Sherwood Forest.

“I spend my working life protecting and encouraging people to cherish Sherwood, but trees are not just for looking at,” said Ian.  “We have a brilliant raw material and wood has been worked for thousands of years.  It would be great to see more local craftspeople using our timber.  Areas like Worksop and Ollerton were once famous chair making areas and the potential remains.  Sometimes we can’t see the wood for the trees and don’t realise timber is a fantastic resource, as well as providing us with a wonderful and historic landscape.”

The pair make chairs and stools and other household items, most of which they give away or use themselves.

“We’ll be teaching people how to make a stool and spurring them to be creative with the design,” he adds.  “Wood, shaving horse, draw knife and mallet, together with practical advice are all you need to get started.  There’s tremendous satisfaction in making something with your own hands and taking it away to use.”

Tools, materials and refreshments will be provided and lunch on Sunday will cooked over a camp fire.  You can also spend the night in the woods with tents and sleeping bag and enjoy breakfast cooked in wood-fired clay oven.

Ski hosts Mel & Tash take ‘time out’ after spending the day guiding guests around the ski slopes of Vallandry & Les Arcs.

High Speed Santa!

Father Christmas will leave his reindeers in Lapland and take to a Segway to pay a call on Sherwood Pines Forest Park!

Roving Santa will rev-up on his dream machine to help deliver more fresh Christmas trees to the beauty spot’s popular Forestry Commission sales point, near Clipstone, Notts.

Segways – invented in the USA and described as self-balancing two wheeled electric transportation machines – have been touted as the future of green commuting.

In spring they will make their debut in the 1,200 hectare (3,000 acre) forest park when Go-Ape offers them for hire to visitors for woodland safaris. Chris Bray, Forestry Commission Recreation Manager, said:

“The Go-Ape guys wanted to get in a bit of practice so kindly offered to help us move Christmas trees around the sales area, getting into the mood by dressing as Santa. Segways are a brilliant way of exploring the forest and this will be a terrific new attraction next year.”

Christmas tree sales run daily in Sherwood Pines until 23 December from 9am to 3.30pm.

Thousands of pines, fir and spruce are up for grabs, but an on-going national shortage of Christmas trees means revellers are being urged to buy early to get the best of the crop.

For the past month or so i’ve been busily working on a video project for the enthusiastic and professional Ben Hunter of Mini Kicks.

His brief was to produce a 2/3 minute video for his website showing the vibrancy and energy of his football academy and nursery sessions with children aged between 2 years 6 months and 5 years.

I spent several hours with Ben and his team at the Keepmoat Stadium and Loversall Farm Day Nursery before finally having enough material to work with.

HRH The Duke of York with Bridon Group CEO Jonathan Templeman

His Royal Highness Prince Andrew visits Doncaster based wire and rope manufacturer Bridon International.

The Duke of York visited the factory so as to better understand Bridon’s offer to international customers and more effectively promote their products and services overseas.

During the visit the Duke toured the wire mill and attended a presentation by CEO Jon Templeman who highlighted the technical complexity or wire rope manufacture and showcased how it’s innovation supports and drives progress in a range of sectors across the globe.

Seasonal outdoor fun!

Having collected a pocketful of conkers earlier on in the week whilst walking the dog the next thing was alway’s going to be “Dad, can I have a conker fight?”

Now that wouldn’t normally be a problem but wait!

It’s that time of the year when we here of the ‘seasonal’ school conker bans, on health and safety grounds of course! I also recall reading a story earlier on in the week about a primary school banning pupils from using traditional leather football’s, too heavy? And what about the first snowball fight of the season?

Well as a responsible parent I allowed the boys to wear the appropriate PPE and go into the garden for a bit of fun!

Health & safety gone mad? I’m off to climb a tree!

The Drifters perform in front of Cusworth Hall

A fantastic day was had by all at this year’s Cusworth Music Festival.

Set in the grounds of Cusworth Country Park in the shadow of Cusworth Hall this year’s event was headlined by The Drifters with all proceeds going to Doncaster cancer charity – The Aurora Centre.

Poet Dave looks for inspiration

A rambling poet is re-tracing an epic journey last made 350 years ago around the ancient boundaries of Sherwood Forest.

Dave Wood, 45, has won National Lottery/Arts Council England funding to encourage people to wax lyrical during a 90 mile trek taking in leafy glades and once forested areas.

The northern section of his odyssey will take him from south of Worksop and through Clumber Park towards Ollerton.

Now to celebrate International Year of the Forest on 11 September he’ll make a detour to Sherwood Pines Forest Park, near Edwinstowe, to take part in a Forestry Commission free Discovery Day.

There he will inspire folk to contribute a poetic line and combine everyone’s creative ideas into a modern day saga of Sherwood Forest.

Dave explained:

“The perambulation of Sherwood Forest was last carried out in 1662 by officials to check the boundary was being respected and ensure venison were not being taken.  I want to replicate the original journey as far as possible and see how the landscape has changed and the threats posed to the remaining ancient woodland.  I’m doing the walk in sections and the idea is to inspire and talk to people about the environment, see what it means to them and host creative workshops.  Most of the walking should be done by Guy Fawkes Night and I aim to produce the results in the New Year.  Like any adventure, you never quite know what is going to happen.”

The Sherwood Pines Discovery Day runs between 10am and 4pm.  As well as poetry there’ll be axe racing, Nordic walking, bike rides, wildlife displays, a mass tree hug and shelter building – all to celebrate the wonder of the woods.

Four Yorkshire students have benefitted from the recent success and expansion by the UK’s leading waste coal recovery company, RecyCoal.  The company, that delivers sustainable solutions for previously mined sites, has appointed one qualified apprentice to the position of Mobile Plant Engineer and a further three as trainees.

Maintenance Engineer Nathan Tuck 22, from Conisbrough, South Yorkshire, has completed a four year NVQ Level 3 apprenticeship in Engineering Maintenance (Mechanical) at Doncaster College.  Nathan said: “It’s great, to now be qualified, the hands on experience I have gained at RecyCoal really helped me with my theoretical work at college.  I’m really pleased to be a fully qualified member of the mobile plant unit here, and I look forward to working on the variety of projects RecyCoal will deploy me on.”

Sales and Marketing Manager, David Stafford from the Doncaster based company, commented: “The expansion of the company lies in the quality of our employees.  It is essential we continue to invest, not only in equipment but the skills needed by our employees to support the company’s worldwide expansion programme.”

RecyCoal, specialises in the recovery of waste coal sites and is working on projects throughout the UK, including Langton (on the border of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire), the United States, Australia and Eastern Europe.  The company, utilising its own unique hybrid Dual Density Natural Medium process, removes coal from variable contaminated feed, and offers a complete service of design, build, own and operate to restore sites to high environmental standards producing final landforms which are in keeping the surrounding landscape.

Nathan along with the three new recruits, all from Doncaster and the surrounding villages, will be putting their skills and knowledge into practice ensuring the plant machinery used to complete the projects is fully maintained at all times.  The three younger apprentices, who are now embarking on the four year apprenticeship scheme with RecyCoal, come from diverse backgrounds.  Sam Jackson, 18, was previously working in retail and decided his career path was best placed in engineering and is now working to achieve the same qualification as Nathan.  Likewise, Michael Lindley 18, is a keen motor mechanic and decided to further his skills in an industrial environment and Greg Bennett 17, who found RecyCoal’s apprenticeship scheme through a dedicated website, wanted to progress from an NVQ level 2 qualification in Performing Engineering and Operations to a work based NVQ Level 3.

David continued: “Apprenticeships are an ideal resource to ensure that certain skills are not lost and for those young school leavers that have the tenacity and determination to work as hard as Nathan has done, the benefits are certainly rewarding. Our other young recruits will gain a vast amount of practical knowledge at RecyCoal, we have staff with years of experience in the coal mining and engineering industries and this coupled with a hands on approach will certainly assist them in their future career with the company.”
