New Year With Ski Olympic

Chillin!

Ski hosts Mel & Tash take ‘time out’ after spending the day guiding guests around the ski slopes of Vallandry & Les Arcs.

The girl’s both work for award-winning independent tour operator Ski Olympic, a Doncaster based company offering ski & snowboard holidays to top resorts in the French Alps.

Myself and the family enjoyed are fourth stay at the company’s Chalet Hotel La Foret over the New Year break. Located in Vallandry it makes up one of the six separate villages making up Les Arcs. The area linked with La Plagne by the fantastic Vanoise Express, a double deck cable car linking the two resorts, makes up the Paradiski area, one of the biggest resorts in the world!

If your considering a winter ski holiday in the French Alps then look no further than Ski Olympic, I cannot recommend them highly enough from their attention to detail, delicious food & drink, friendly staff and excellent ski hosting service.

Check out their website      www.skiolympic.com  and follow them on Twitter:  @skiolympic  for their latest offers.

First edit with the GoPro HD Camera – Paradiski

Decisions, decisions, decisions!

Well, having made the decision I opted to buy the GoPro HD over the Countour 1080p and finally had the chance to put the camera through it’s paces during our Christmas ski trip to Vallandry in the French Alps.

The camera it is not much bigger than a matchbox with 2 buttons, shutter release and menu. The lens is a very compact piece of convex glass of about 10mm in diameter, I had to ask myself ‘could this tiny unit produce the kind of images that GoPro show on their website?

Well, the answer is yes!

My movie was shot using the r3 setting on the camera which shoots HD video at 1280×720 resolution with a frame rate of 50 frames per second. A little conversion of the clips was required to take advantage of the 50 fps setting (Cinema Tools) along with changing the mp4 files (MPEG Streamclip) shot in camera to Quicktime files (.mov) in order for them to be recognised and edited in Final Cut Pro.

I came home with 60gb of clips, here’s the first edit of these, make sure you select the 720p HD setting to get the most from the stunning quality!

Back to the Alps!

View from La Rosiere towards Arc 1950 and 2000

As the weather turns colder in the UK and the central heating is turned on we look forward to the winter ski season in Europe.

As an avid ‘web cam watcher’ I note that snow has already fallen in some areas overnight and the ‘glacier’ resorts of Tignes in France, Saas Fee and Zermatt in Switzerland are already open for winter sports.

This year we visited a freezing (-16)  Peisey-Vallandry , part of the Paradiski area, which link’s the Arc villages, 1600, 1950, 2000 with La Plagne via the spectacular Vanoise Express, the area offers 425km of ski slopes!

We also enjoyed a ‘sun drenched’ week in La Rosiere at Easter.

As we plan our 2011 trips we will be turning again to our good friends at Ski Olympic, an award-winning, Doncaster based, independent tour operator offering catered chalets in the French Alps, take a look at their website, I cannot recommend them highly enough for service and attention to detail.

Enjoy the movie trailer for this season’s adventure along with a selection of still images of some stunning landscapes!
