Don Valley Cycles is celebrating its 20th year in business this year, They have been serving cyclists needs from the same business premises at 10 Chequer Road during the whole 20 year period.

Owner Martin Maltby said the early days were quite tough, starting business in the middle of a recession was quite daunting but keeping positive and knowing the cycle trade very well after working for 5 years for a national cycle supplier set him in good stead .He also knows the sport of cycle racing very well as he has represented Great Britain both at junior and senior level on numerous occasions  highlighted by being selected to compete in the Junior World Championships in Casablanca, Morocco in 1986.

Martin has seen a major increase of cycling and cycle sales in the last few years with the recent success of the Olympic cycling team in London and Sir Bradley Wiggins victory in the 2012 Tour de France. Due to the popularity, Don Valley Cycles in conjunction with Doncaster Wheelers cycling club run a novice ride on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month which is proving very popular on a stepping stone for riders to increase their cycling knowledge and to progress through the Doncaster Wheelers club runs.

As part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, Don Valley Cycles are organising a series of cycle road races with the 1st one being in conjunction with the sprotborough scouts fun run on the 23rd of June at Sprotborough called the Danum Trophy road race where anyone can come to see the spectacle of a cycle race. Also in the summer staff and some regular customers are taking on the challenge to cycle from Doncaster to London in a day covering approximately 200 miles.

Later in the year we will also be having an evening meal at the Earl of Doncaster hotel with Doncaster Wheelers cycling club members who have been sponsored by Don Valley Cycles for a number of years.

Martin is definitely looking forward to the next 20 years and eats, sleeps and breathes cycling. “I was a cyclist long before I started Don Valley Cycles and will be for a long time after having just returned from a cycle tour by flying to Berlin with his bike he has just cycled back over 6 days covering 650 miles back to Doncaster.

“All the staff who work in the shop are also very experienced cyclists so if its knowledge and advice you need from a cycle shop we are the ones to try. We have a very busy workshop and service and repair all makes of bikes. Our speciality is the custom build market of racing bikes using the best brands and components to satisfy the customer’s requirements. We spend time and pay attention to detail by making sure the bike fits the customer perfectly. We pride ourselves on customer satisfaction and word of mouth is our main business promotional tool.”
